THE QUEST FOR EXTRATERRESTRIAL INTELLIGENCE / LA BÚSQUEDA DE INTELIGENCIA EXTRATERRESTRE

There will surely be differences among civilizations which cannot be glimpsed until information is available about the evolution of many civilizations. Because of our isolation from the rest of the cosmos, we have information on the evolution of only one civilization - our own. And the most important aspect of that information, the future, remains closed to us. Perhaps it is not likely, but it is certainly possible that the future of human civilization depends on the receipt and decoding of interstellar messages.

And what if we make a long-term and dedicated search for extraterrestrial intelligence and fail? Even then we surely will not have wasted our time. We will have developed an important technology, with applications to many other aspects of our own civilization. We will have greatly added to our knowledge of the physical universe. And we will have calibrated the importance and uniqueness of our species, our civilization and other planets. For if intelligent life is rare or absent elsewhere, we will have learned something about the rarity and value of our culture and our biological patrimony, which have been painstakingly extracted over four billion years of tortuous evolutionary history.

Such a finding will stress as perhaps nothing else can our responsibilities to future generations: because the most likely explanation of negative results, after a comprehensive and resourceful search, is that societies destroy themselves before they are advanced enough to establish a high-power radio transmitting service. Thus, organization of a search for interstellar radio messages, quite apart from the outcome, is likely to have a cohesive and constructive influence on the whole of the human condition.

But we will not know the outcome of such a search, much less the contents of messages from interstellar civilizations, if we do not make a serious effort to listen for signals. It may be that civilizations are divided into two great classes, those which make such an effort, achieve contact and become new members of a loosely tied federation of galactic communities, and those which cannot or choose not to make such an effort, or who lack the imagination to try, and who in consequence soon decay and vanish.

It is difficult to think of another enterprise within our capability and at relatively modest cost which holds as much promise for the future of humanity.

Seguramente habrá diferencias entre las civilizaciones las cuales no podrán ser vislumbradas  hasta que la informació sobre la evolución de muchas civilizaciones pueda estar disponible. A causa de nuestro aislamiento del resto del cosmos, tenemos información sobre la evolución de una sola civilización - la nuestra. Y el aspecto más importante de esa información, el futuro, permanece cerrado para nosotros. Tal vez no es probable, pero es ciertamente posible que el futuro de la civilización humana depende de la recepción y decodificación de mensajes interestelares.

¿Y si hacemos una búsqueda de inteligencia extraterreste a largo plazo y ésta falla? Incluso entonces seguramente no habremos perdido el tiempo. Nosotros hemos desarrollado una importante tecnología, con aplicaciones a muchos otros aspectos de nuestra propia civilización. Habremos incrementado enormemente nuestro conocimiento del universo físico. Nosotros habremos equilibrado la importancia y la singularidad de nuestra especie, nuestra civilización y otros planetas. Porque, si la vida inteligente es rara o ausente en otras partes, habremos aprendido algo acerca de la rareza y el valor de nuestra cultura y nuestro patrimonio biológico, que han sido cuidadosamente extraídos de más de cuatro mil millones de años de historia evolutiva tortuosa.

Este hallazgo hará hincapié en nuestras responsabilidades  hacia las generaciones futuras: porque la explicación más probable de los resultados negativos, después de una búsqueda exhaustiva y con recursos, es que las sociedades se destruyen antes de que sean lo suficientemente avanzada como para establecer un radio de servicio de transmisión a alta potencia. Por lo tanto, la organización de una búsqueda de mensajes de radio interestelares, al margen de los resultados, es probable que tenga una influencia coherente y constructiva sobre la totalidad de la condición humana.

Pero no vamos a conocer el resultado de esa búsqueda, y mucho menos el contenido de los mensajes de civilizaciones interestelares, si no hacemos un esfuerzo serio para escuchar señales. Puede ser que las civilizaciones se dividan en dos grandes clases, los que hacen ese esfuerzo, logran el contacto y se convierten en nuevos miembros de una federación atada a las comunidades galácticas, y las que no pueden o deciden no hacer ese esfuerzo, o que carecen de la imaginación para intentar, y que, en consecuencia, pronto se pudren y desaparecen.

Es difícil pensar en otro emprendimiento dentro de nuestra capacidad y por un costo relativamente bajo que promete tanto para el futuro de la humanidad.
